on 15 March 1940, the Seck Kia Management purchased a piece of land with an old wooden bungalow at 57, Gajah Berang Road from a Chettier for RM3,000
The new SKE Temple

This new SKE Temple cost about RM30,000 after its completion in 1956.

Laying the foundation stone of the new shrine hall

On 27th April 1956, the foundation stone of the new shrine hall was laid by Mr Goh Tiong Tan, between 7am and 8am. It was placed on the spot where the altar was to be constructed ( where the main oil lamp cum donation box in the Shrine is now )
Installation of the Buddha Image

The Buddha Image was then, brought into the new Shrine Hall to be reinstalled. During the construction of the new temple the image was temporatily housed in the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple,Temple Street. Sri Maha Bodhi Shrine
In 1956, Ven. A. Jinarakkhita painstakainly carried a Bodhi sapling from Sri Lanka and presented it to SKE. The sapling was ceremoniously planted on the new moon of the 8th Lunar month. The sapling is historically linked to the lineage of the actual Bodhi tree under which our Master , the Buddha, attained enlightenment. The Bodhi area was first marked with the erecting of a low concrete wall by youths in 1963. under the supervision of Venerable Ananda Mangala. A few years later, the Bodhi tree itself was encircled with a low wall to protect it's roots.
A steel fence was erected above the low wall in 2000 and another major facelift in 2004 saw the Bodhi area renovated beautifully. Antique tiles were added to the low wall and walk-path.
Today the Bodhi stands proud and tall, giving devotees refuge, not only physically from the Sun but also spiritually, like a balm for a weekened mind.
Evening Puja is held every Wednesday night and new moon nights at the Bodhi promptly at 8pm.
Another special Puja for good health is held at 10 pm on Wednesdays and this Bojhanga Puja was initated by Bro Kenny Chan after witnessing a similar Puja at the Sri Lankarama Temple, Singapore. Together with Ven. A. Ratanasiri, they started the Bojhanga Puja at the Bodhi with fruits and incense offerings, with a modest attendance of less than ten devotees. When word got around, a family whose son was in coma due to an accident came and made offerings as well as to seek the blessings of the Bojhanga chants. Miraculously, the youth opened his eyes the very next day. Another heart warming experience is of a young girl striken with cancer who came and attended the Bojjhanga Puja with her mother. After a few months, the young girl, who was bald from chemotheraphy, recovered from her predicament.
We wish all those tourched by the efficacies of the Bojjhanga Puja good health , peace and happiness always. Sahdhu.

Back in the early 70's bicycle was the main source of transportation for most of us, those having motor bikes would be considered above average and of course those driving cars were considered the upper class. Nevertheless we were all like one big family and red beans soup would be our dessert after Dhamma talk. Then most of us would rush for the carrom board while some would prefer to play " Hantu Gala " at the badminton court not forgetting some "Monkeys" would climb on top of the " Kemboja " tree and rest there. Those were the recollections and memories of my childhood with SKE. I had so much fun with friends and always appreciative of the Dhamma. My late mother would never question my activities when I told her that I'd be spending my days in the temple.

I am so blessed to have found this blog. Ven. Ananda Mangala brought my brother and me to this temple in 1983 during a visit to Singapore. I remember meeting several leading members of the temple's laity at that time. I also attended a dhamma talk that the Ven. gave that evening. I have fond memories and a deep spiritual connection to this place. Ven. Ananda Mangala stayed at our home in Sri Lanka whenever he visited Sri Lanka. In 1976 my brother and I stayed with the Ven. for over two months in Singapore. I miss him and cherish the dhamma legacy he bestowed.
